Mother of All Living

And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

Genesis 3:20

Let's all be honest here for just a moment. The thought of naming your wife is a little strange, right? Adam was tasked with not only naming all the animals but also the woman that God created to be his comparable companion. The above passage tells us of course that her name was Eve because she was the mother of all living.

The name Eve literally means life, living. I personally think that Adam gave her this name for two reasons. First, obviously she is the one that will give birth to their children and from those children all life will follow. By the way, this is why racism is both evil and ridiculous. Every single one of us come from the same source of life and genetic make up. Our humanness makes us one no matter our ethnicity, color, language, national origin, etc.

Second, I believe that Adam saw the nature of the words life and living emanating from Eve. He saw that she was able to be both a protector and nurturer. He saw in her boldness and authority mixed with compassion and humility. In Eve there was a strength to tend to the garden even the most difficult of tasks but yet she was able to stop and enjoy the fragrance of a beautiful flower as she caressed its delicate pedals.

How incredibly that describes a Godly mother! She is a protector and nurturer with a spirit of boldness and authority while showing compassion and humility. She is strong enough to shake the world yet gentle enough to rock the cradle.
